Qualifier Coin sees other side of Ivanovic

Ana Ivanovic became the first No1 seed to be dumped out of the US Open at the second round stage for 40 years after losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to French qualifier Julie Coin, the world No188.

This shocking defeat is the latest setback in the Serb's decline since she won the French Open title and will cost the her the top ranking.

But the result will give British No1 Anne Keothavong hope she can upset the odds against Olympic champion Elena Dementieva in their third-round match later today.

For Coin it is a remarkable achievement - and she made the main draw of a Slam for the first time by defeating Britain's Elena Baltacha in the final round of qualifying. Now, instead of mulling over retiring at the end of this season, the 25-year-old will play another former No1, Amelie Mauresmo, the player she used to idolise.

Coin said: "Earlier this year I was thinking, 'Am I really made to play tennis? Am I going to be able to get in the top 100 one day?' Because it's not worth it to play tennis if you're not in the top 100.

"At one point I was thinking like to maybe stop at the end of this year. So I guess now I'm going to think about keeping playing."

Ivanovic must now wait to see who is going to take over as No1. She said: "Obviously, if you ask me at the moment if I'm playing like No1, the answer is probably not. This was a very, very disappointing loss for me, but it's something I have to accept."

Former champion Serena Williams, one of those players who could become No1, had no problems reaching the third round, defeating Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-1, while sister Venus easily overcome Rossana de los Rios 6-0, 6-3 to stay on course for a quarter-final meeting with her sibling.
