Orient golden days when Kitch was in

Many switch off at the mention of kitchens but in 1978 it was the word on everyone's lips.

Peter Kitchen became a household name back then, as his goals steered Leyton Orient to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

The striker - nicknamed Kitch, or The Goal Gourmet - scored seven Cup goals as Orient, then in the old Second Division, knocked out three First Division sides - Norwich, Chelsea and Middlesbrough - before losing to Arsenal one step from Wembley.

It began with a third-round 1-1 draw against Norwich at Brisbane Road before Kitchen's strike from 10 yards won the replay and secured a home fourth-round tie with Second Division Blackburn.

Next, Kitchen scored twice to put Orient into the last 16, where Chelsea waited.

Goalkeeper John Jackson held the First Division side at bay for 90 pulsating minutes at Brisbane Road as Orient held on for a 0-0 draw and a replay at Stamford Bridge. Kitchen's double strike - the first of which was a show-stopper - fired Orient into the quarter-finals and they celebrated with a crate of lager. A 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park earned another replay and, roared on by an 18,000 crowd, Kitchen and Joe Mayo put Orient in the Cup semi-finals for the first time.

Orient headed back to Stamford Bridge for the semi-final and did their best to make it a joyous occasion. Skipper Phil Hoadley took to the field flanked by a pearly king and queen, but once the game kicked off, fantasy was stopped in its tracks. Malcolm Macdonald scored twice and Graham Rix rubbed salt into the wounds as the Orient express was halted in its tracks with a 3-0 defeat.
