Glazer's United shake up

Malcolm Glazer began his shake up of Manchester United today as chairman Sir Roy Gardner became the first high-profile casualty of the American tycoon's new regime.

Gardner, who is also chief executive of Centrica, quit this morning along with fellow non-executive directors Ian Much and Jim O'Neill.

At the same time three of Glazer's sons were appointed to the United board.

Joel, the driving force behind the £800million takeover, Avi, the financial brains behind the family's business empire and Bryan were all made directors.

The reshuffle marks the first major changes to hit United since Glazer and his sons secured more than 76 per cent control of the club last month.

They are expected to reveal the exact level of their ownership in the club next Monday when they receive replies to their £3-a-share offer from shareholders who have not yet sold.

Although chief executive David Gill is expected to stay on to help the Glazers as they assume day-to-day control of the club, it is thought Joel will become a central figure and his father's main representative at the club.

In a statement to the Stock Exchange this morning, United also revealed how commercial director Andy Anson is to be reinstated to the club's PLC board after he was voted off by Glazer at last year's annual general meeting.
