Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp 'delighted' to lose £800 on Leicester Premier League title bet

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp has lost £800 on a bet that Leicester wouldn’t win the Premier League - but says he is 'delighted' to be writing the cheque.

Leicester were priced at 5,000/1 to win the title this season after narrowly avoiding relegation last term, but Claudio Ranieri's Foxes have been confirmed as champions with two games to spare.

Leicester's success saw a number of extraordinary betting stories, with one Foxes fan winning £20,600 on a pre-season title bet.

Another punter made what has been described as the 'worst cash out decision in history' after taking a 45p return on his 5,000/1 title bet on the first day of the season.

And Redknapp wrote in his Daily Mail column: “One of the lads at my golf club was telling me how Leicester would win the league not that long ago. ‘I got 25-1 with the bookies,’ he said.

‘I’ll give you 40-1,’ I said, expecting any one of the leading pack to catch them.

"And so my first job after Leicester won the league is to write out an £800 cheque. Here’s something: I’m delighted to be doing it.”

The Sky pundit went on to talk about Leicester's accomplishment, saying: “Anyone who loves and has played sport will recognise what an achievement this is.

"We know the playground rules: we can’t beat him, he is bigger than me.

“When I was a player, I would always think: ‘We can’t beat Manchester United, they have got a better manager.’

“But this Leicester team did not take that attitude into any game. A bigger team, bigger salaries, a bigger stadium, bigger players?

"So what! We can beat you. It is a giantkilling title win.”
