Cesc Fabregas was quick to silence the critics after Barcelona secured a two-goal lead against Manchester City going into the second-leg of the Champions League last 16.

On the eve of the game Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claimed that Manchester City were set to face the worst Barcelona side for ‘many, many years’ in the last 16 of the Champions League.

But second-half goals from Lionel Messi and Dani Alves - after Martin Demichelis had been dismissed - were enough to see the visitors take a healthy advantage back to Camp Nou ahead of the second leg in March.

And Fabregas, who was substituted in the closing moments, was delighted to prove the doubters wrong with a comfortable shutout victory over Europe’s leading scorers.

Adamant to prove his side are far from declining, Fabregas told ITV: “We had a great result tonight. The fans put so much pressure on and that's what makes this so win special.

“We had a point to prove, and we did it very well. Some people were talking a bit too much before the game and now they have to shut up for a few days.

"You never know in football, but in three weeks we will have to play very, very well."
