George Michael said getting arrested on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs was 'my own stupid fault, as usual'.

But the 42-year-old singer said, unlike his arrest for lewd conduct in a public toilet in Los Angeles eight years ago, he would not be making a record of this one - 'even though it is tempting'.

Fears were raised about the former Wham! star's health when he was found slumped over the wheel of his car after parking 'at a crazy angle' at Hyde Park Corner in London early yesterday.

Officers arrested him on suspicion of possessing class C drugs before bailing him to return to a police station next month. In a statement, Michael said he was expecting a rough ride from the press. He added: 'I have been through enough in 24 years of dealing with the media to know what I am in for.

'Much of it will be inaccurate or simply untrue. I can handle that, it is my own stupid fault, as usual. I was in possession of class C drugs which is an offence and I have no complaints about the police, who were professional throughout.'

Michael was initially arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive but, after being taken to a police station early on Sunday and examined by a doctor, the decision to arrest was reversed.
