Thousands of people have joined a Facebook page promising to stand on their doorsteps and ring a bell for two minutes on Christmas Eve.

The campaign, organised by Mary Beggs-Reid from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, was created to help battle loneliness and bring communities together after a difficult year.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancee Carrie Symonds are backing the plan to ring bells at 6pm.

Here’s how you can get involved too:

How to join the Christmas Eve jingle

Much like Clap For Carers earlier this year, all you need to do to join the campaign is to stand on your doorstep at 6pm on Christmas Eve and ring a bell.

If you don’t have access to a bell, don’t fear; there are plenty of apps you can download to your phone that will make the sound for you.

Why was the event set up?

Mary Beggs-Reid first organised the event as a way for residents on her street in Yorkshire to "end 2020 with a bit of magic, hope and togetherness".

Interest quickly spiralled after a Facebook page was created. The event page now has around 450,000 “likes”.

The idea is to make those suffering from loneliness - after a difficult year of the pandemic and recent tightening of Christmas restrictions - feel the festive spirit.

Beggs-Reid said: "This will be our happy moment. Covid can not take this from us so ring louder.

"This year the Christmas spirit is so needed and for two minutes we can make sure nobody feels alone."

Beggs-Reid has since spoken on the phone with Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds.

“He said him, Carrie and Wilfred will be out ringing bells to help Santa on his way," she said after the call. ”They love the idea and will look for bells to join us. They said they support anything helping Santa fly his sleigh for the children."

Sir Tom Moore also endorsed the event, calling it: “a brilliant initiative at a time where it is really needed”.
