Singing cabbie treats his fares to garage and road ballads

A black cab driver is showing passengers his musical knowledge by belting out songs as he navigates the streets of London.

Scott Neave abstains from the usual chat about the weather or politics to treat his fares to songs from all genres. His repertoire ranges from ballads, garage-style raps and a cockney cover of Cameo’s Word Up, which Mr Neave said is particularly popular on Friday night West End runs.

To add to the weekend disco feeling, he flicks the interior lights on and off to create a strobe effect.

Mr Neave, 38, from Highbury, said: “I’ve done over 200 gigs in this taxi and every single one is different.” The former bus driver, who qualified as a cabbie 18 months ago, claims a set list so exhaustive that on a fare between central London and Heathrow he can perform non-stop hits either a cappella or with a backing track.

A video of his singing and rapping has had more than 6,000 YouTube hits. Mr Neave said: “People are usually stressed but it has the feelgood factor. It goes down really well on Friday nights. People love it and start shouting and whooping.”

Mr Neave made it to the second round of the X Factor but remains hopeful that Simon Cowell will flag him down. “I’m just hoping that one day the right person will get in the back,” he added.
