Appreciation: Genius with an extraordinary list

 

It is no exaggeration to say that the British wine world is in deep shock at the news of Patrick Sandeman’s sudden death. I talked to him only 10 days ago at a tasting in Soho and he was as charming and sharp as ever, showing off wines from Lea and Sandeman’s extraordinary list.

For this was what really marked him out: a genius at finding and importing consistently brilliant wines. Even for the most jaded wine-trade folk, his tastings were a treat and an education. His fantastic shops carry on under business partner Charles Lea. But we will miss Patrick terribly.
