A young motorcyclist died after falling off his bike at a notorious “death trap” junction in north London.
The 25-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was thrown from his white Ducati motorbike on the A1 just south of Stirling Corner in Barnet at about 5.15pm on Saturday.
Paramedics battled to save him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police who are appealing for witnesses do not believe any other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Residents today said they were “not surprised” by the fatality at a junction dubbed the “Stirling Corner death-trap”.
One Twitter user wrote: “Not surprised [at accident] the way Stirling Corner is designed - you take your life in your hands.”
Another resident posted: “It’s pure Russian roulette and needs to be dealt with urgently.”
Last year, the speed limit on the A1 was reduced from 70mph to 50mph by Transport for London.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The North West Serious Collision Investigation Unit are carrying out enquires into the circumstances of the incident.
“At this early stage there have been no eyewitness reports of any other vehicle involved and officers would urge anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.”
