A student who was found lying in a pool of blood has died two days after being stabbed in the chest.

Dwayne Simpson, 20, from Stockwell, was attacked in an alley in Brixton on Tuesday and was discovered in nearby St John’s Crescent at 5pm.

Police and passers-by gave him CPR as he lay on the ground. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died yesterday.

Police have launched a murder inquiry and a teenage girl was being questioned at a police station today.

A neighbour said: “There was a straight line of blood right down the alleyway to where his body was. He must have tried to run away but then they caught up with him.

“I think the first time they stabbed him was in the leg. He wasn’t into gang stuff like most of the kids round here. It’s such a waste of life. He was a nice, decent boy and was a churchgoer.”

Friends today paid tribute to former Lambeth College student Mr Simpson, nicknamed Squirrel, and who was a friend of 16-year-old Peter Hagan, who was murdered at a birthday party in Wandsworth last February.

Maxine King wrote on Twitter: “Last time I spoke to Dwayne, he was telling me that he was trying to change and was currently looking for a job. I just don’t get it. I can’t believe I’ll never get a chance to say goodbye. Things are never gonna be the same.”

Hayley Mills said: “Squirrel was one of my favourites. He had a crazy side but deep down he had a good heart. Life’s so short.”

Three 16-year-old males were arrested shortly after the attack, two on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and one on suspicion of attempted murder.

They have been bailed until May, pending further inquiries.

On Wednesday, a 19-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Detectives urged witnesses to call the Homicide and Major Crime Command incident room on 020 8721 4805 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
