Austrians flock to premiere of satire on Fritzl’s incest

Monster: Fritzl fathered seven children with his captive daughter
Allen Hall13 April 2012

A satirical play about Josef Fritzl, who held his daughter captive in a basement for 24 years and fathered seven children with her, has sold out in Vienna.

There was a police presence for the premiere at the Anatomie theatre last night. Playwright Hubsi Kramar said Pension F tackles media coverage of the case.

"Behind the brazen, feigned theatre of sympathy are hardcore profit interests," he said, adding that he had received death threats.

The play was promoted with the line: "In the cellar, under the carpet, you can't get any lower than that."

Fritzl goes on trial next month.
