Ryan Sessegnon scored on his Champions League debut but it wasn't enough to save a much-changed Tottenham side from a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

With qualification - and second place - already secured Jose Mourinho took the chance to experiment with his line-up, handing first starts to Ryan Sessegnon and Christian Eriksen since he took over.

Bayern Munich named a strong line-up although interim coach Hansi Flick left 10-goal Robert Lewandowski on the bench - much to Tottenham's relief.

Tottenham were humbled 7-2 in their heaviest-ever defeat in Europe in the reverse fixture but under a new coach, there was optimism they could take a decent result away from Munich.

But the Bavarian giants, chasing a 100 per cent record in the competition, dominated from the off and took the lead when Kingsley Coman ghosted round at the far post and slotted past Paulo Gazzaniga.

It was no less than the hosts had deserved after a flurry of early chances, but Tottenham drew level just six minutes later. Sessegnon received a bouncing ball at the far post and the 19-year-old rifled it past Manuel Neuer to open his first Tottenham account.

Bayern picked up from where they left off with their early pressure, with Serge Gnabry striking against the post before Thiago somehow missed the rebound from two yards out.

But the group leaders continued their relentless pursuit of a goal to retake the lead and got their wish on the stroke of half-time. Gnabry and Thiago exchanged a neat one two, with the latter crossing to the far post. Young full-back Alphonso Davies struck against the post and substitute Thomas Muller stabbed home the rebound.

It was a timely blow for Spurs, who had hoped to hold out after being under pressure for the majority of the first half and things didn't improve after the break.

Having threatened on a number of occasions to get on the scoresheet, Philippe Coutinho - a former loan target for Spurs in the summer before joining Bayern - curled home a third from the edge of the box.

Mourinho opted against bringing on 17-year-old Troy Parrott towards the end as Spurs ended their group stage campaign in defeat and can now look forward to finding out their knockout round opponents.
