EastEnders fans were shocked to spot two former cast members from the British soap on the Oscars red carpet.

Ben Hardy, who shot to fame as Peter Beale in the long-running BBC series, made an appearance at the star-studded event as part of the cast of Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

Anita Dobson, who played Angie Watts from the first episode of the soap until 1988, attended with her husband Brian May.

Twitter users voiced their surprise (and amusement) as they spotted the two former Walford inhabitants at the glamorous event, branding their presence “bizarre.”

“There are two former Eastenders actors at the #Oscars tonight. Bet they never thought that would happen!” one wrote.

“Bet Peter Beale from #eastenders AKA @benhardy0291 can’t believe he’s gone from Walford to the #Oscars,” another added.

“Peter Beale at the Oscars? A step up from the Soap Awards, innit?” one social media user joked.

Others suggested that Hollywood actors might feel a little star-struck in the presence of the small screen legends, as one fan wrote: “I hope these stars know they’re in the presence of Dame Angie Watts and His Royal Highness Peter Beale. We’re not in Walford any more Toto!”

After appearing in EastEnders from 2013 to 2015, Hardy landed a role in X-Men sequel Apocalypse. He played Roger Taylor in Bohemian Rhapsody opposite Best Actor nominee Rami Malek's Freddie Mercury.

The Queen biopic was nominated for five awards at tonight's ceremony, and has so far scooped trophies for Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing.
