Furious viewers of Channel 4 have responded mockingly to new documentary My Week As A Muslim.

The one-off programme sees a white woman dress as a Pakistani and attempt to integrate into the Muslim community.

The show has drawn criticism for protagonist Katie Freeman’s decision to alter her appearance by donning a hijab, darkening her skin and using prosthetics to change the shape of her nose.

Ahead of the show, many social media users called her Pakistani costume "brownface" and slated Channel 4’s decision to air the show as "disgusting".

After the show aired, dozens of comments on Twitter mocked the Freeman's realisation about Muslims during the programme that "they're just normal people like me."

"The patronising remark ... just made me snap," said one woman.

Many viewers were critical, with one viewer asking: "What kind of brain deafening bogus is this?"

Watchers wondered why not simply ask a Muslim woman what it was like to be a Muslim.

"Next week on Channel 4, a man dresses as a woman so he can witness harassment, instead of directly asking a woman about it," said one Twitter user as the hashtag #MyWeekAsAMuslim trended.

"How depressing that a Muslim woman's voice isn't considered valid enough to speak their own truth," wrote another.

Some however said that the show was valuable since it showed somebody who previously knew little about Muslims learning about Islamic culture.

"It was cliched C4 programming ... but what it did show was was one person being educated out of ignorance. This is a good thing."

Another said it was an enlightening show.

"[It] was such an eye opening documentary! Too many people have blinkers on these days!!" he said.
