A moped rider died after colliding with a car at traffic lights outside a tube station in south London last night.
The 40-year-old man was pronounced dead in hospital following the accident outside Kennington station in Kennington Park Road at 6.20pm.
The crash happened when a Vauxhall Zafira turned right into Braganza Street into the path of the oncoming scooter, heading towards Brixton.
The 34-year-old driver of the car, who stopped at the scene, was arrested and was today being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Police believe they know the victim’s identity but await formal identification and confirmation that next of kin have been informed.
Jerry Jones, Met Police roads and traffic duty officer, said: “The scooter was heading south and the car turned across his path. We don’t yet know what the traffic lights were at the time.
“We are keeping an open mind to who is responsible. The rider of the scooter was still alive when he was taken to hospital. The driver of the car has been arrested.”
A local shopkeeper said: “I came outside and saw police and ambulances everywhere. The man driving the scooter was in the road and someone was doing CPR on him.
“I think he was under the car. His helmet was to one side. There weren’t many people around at the time. It looked very nasty, it is very sad to hear he has died.”
One Twitter user posted: “Chilling sight, motorcyclist trapped under a car outside Kennington station. People standing in the rain, staring helplessly.”
Officers are appealing for witnesses to the accident or the moments leading up to it to call 0208 285 1574.
