From Lionel Richie to Jay Leno, Shakespeare Ranch is a favourite stopover for stars.

The 134-acre compound beside Lake Tahoe in Nevada, is the scene of the annual Glenbrook Rodeo, where dinner is prepared by US celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse.

A 5,111sq ft entertainment barn features a wine room, saloon-style bar, an arcade, event space and a professional catering kitchen, while seven guesthouses offer 15 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms.

The ranch is for sale with Oliver Luxury Real Estate, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, at £53.2 million.

Built in 1861, it is to be sold for only the third time in its history. Its intriguing name comes from a rocky outcrop that early settlers thought bore a striking resemblance to the Bard. The guesthouses have names including To Be, Not to Be and King Lear. The 200ft of lake frontage has access to a community pier with a boat lift. There is also a grand pool house with an indoor pool and steam spa, fireside dining space, gym, office suite and outdoor spa.

“The property is endowed with grandfathered entitlements,” says Claudia Thompson, representing the ranch. “For instance, horses are no longer allowed on private property in Lake Tahoe but you can keep your horses at Shakespeare Ranch.”
