Midnight's children: Giorgio Armani dazzles in Milan

Giorgio Armani has always been something of a maverick, leaving others to follow as they choose. True to form, his Spring/Summer collection for 2013 was no exception.

Side-stepping this season's dominant themes, Armani avoided prints, offered plenty of trousers and spilled glitter to rival the Milkyway.

For daytime chic, the Armani jacket was pearl gray combined with a matching skirt or wide trousers cropped at the ankle. Cocktail hour beckoned in the lightest of pale pastel chiffon, blending aqua and powderpuff pink, with billowing skirts over cropped trousers and smart little jackets.

By nightfall however, the designer burst into glitter with an array of dazzling gowns and spectacular trousers complimented with plisse silk bodices. Party-time colours included rich midnight blues, wet-slate grays and velvet black.

Speaking of his intended imagery, the designer said: 'This is a woman who doesn't put on airs, rather is young in age or mentality.' Perhaps, in reviewing his new exhibition 'Eccentrico', which traces Armani's style over the last twenty years, the so-called 'Maestro' was reminded of his true colours and thought it about time to go back and do it all again.
