Marie Kondo – author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up – has turned her ideas into a Netflix series called Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, where she visits American families and helps them tidy their homes.

Kondo's KonMari oft-derided method consists of gathering together all of one's belongings, one category at a time, and then keeping only those things that "spark joy" before choosing a place for it to live.

The series has split viewers – some have declared it life changing but others have taken offence at her suggestion of putting unloved books into the bin.

Whether you agree with Kondo or not, the UK can't get enough of decluttering. John Lewis & Partners has seen record breaking sales of storage and organisation products, with storage box sales soaring by 47 per cent, and baskets also seeing significant sales uplifts of 24 per cent on last year.

Matt Thomas, Partner & Utility Shop Buyer at John Lewis & Partners reveals why he thinks the trend has taken off.

“The popularity of Marie Kondo showcasing how best to “declutter” your home has had a huge influence on our customers.

"A tidy home equates to a tidy mind, and it’s clear that customers are taking inspiration and starting early when it comes to spring cleaning.”
