Rebecca Seal’s top three hearts in London

Rebecca Seal’s quest for the best takes her from Hackney to central London
Elegant: Jidori
Rebecca Seal12 February 2016

Best for Japanese: Jidori

This yakitori restaurant is unlike almost everything around it in Dalston — all white minimalism, black stools and understated elegance.

It’s a new opening for Brett Redman, of The Richmond in Haggerston, and skewers are the main event — try hearts and bacon (£4), along with sashimi, fried chicken and a katsu curry Scotch egg.

Meat heaven: Beef & Brew

Best for meat lovers: Beef & Brew

Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot of beef on the menu at this new steakhouse, another gem in the increasingly foodie Kentish Town. It’s in everything from steak salad and salt beef sandwiches to French dip buns and even brisket jam nuggets. Beef heart skewers come with pickles and chestnuts (£4.50).

Info: 323 Kentish Town Road, NW5 (020 7998 1511; beef-and-brew.co.uk)

A favourite: Hoppers

Best for a quick bite: Hoppers

If you haven’t managed to get a table at Gymkhana or Trishna, try Hoppers. Created by the same team, it doesn’t take reservations, but because it has a clever queuing system, you won’t have to wait in the rain. Hoppers are a kind of pancake served with other Sri Lankan and Tamil specialities such as chicken heart chukka (£4.50).
